Journey Through Sound

Journey through sound

Since I can remember, I’ve been a noise maker, always the talkative one in school, singing my afternoons away, & playing with sound naturally, as most children do. Much later, well into my 20’s, I began to capture sound into song & developed an artistic endeavor of song writing. I began to sing my songs in coffee shops, open mic nights, and little street corners in faraway lands, sharing my stories through melodic tones and stringed instruments.

My songs brought to light the hidden aspects of myself that could only be expressed through poetry. The intertwining of my stories and my inner melody made tangible by the friction of air through my vocal chords; the energetic caress bringing the etherial to form.

I noticed, after a while of singing my own songs, that when singing, I felt in total embrace with the moment. It took many years to get over stage fright, and release any thoughts and limiting beliefs which prevented me from sharing my creative expression openly. In those years, walking the Hawaiian Islands with an ukulele and a song in my heart, I did not have any one mentor, or teacher to help me break down those walls. I saw singers around me who inspired me, & I just sort of kept singing until the sound melted the barriers between me and the moment.

This is what singing does for me, brings me into presence. Singing now is a place where no thoughts reside. When in the succor of sound, I simply surrender to the melody. all thoughts become transmuted, and I experience a profound spell of being found in the sound of it all. I am completely, and totally there. My songs became my mantras, a tool for my mind to let go of the chatter and simply be with my expression.

When I realized this, I started singing mantras, ancient sanskrit chants to free the mind from negative afflictions. Mantras, when sung with a devotional spirit, can open your heart to a feeling of unconditional love. I started singing the various names of the divine, words that for me at the time, held no meaning, and yet opened my heart like a seed setting itself free from the soil.

My newest endeavor is to follow the sound back to the seed of creation, and take you all on that journey with me. I’ve been nomadic for 4 years, following the sound. Each land I explore has a song to sing, an energetic melody, and a deeper story rooted in music, in sound, and in creative expression. No matter where I am, or the history or turmoil of the land, if you listen deeply, you can hear the sound of children laughing, the banging of a drum, the effervescent call of the wild, the the sweet whispers of the wind. Many creation stories are rooted in the sound as the force which started it all. THE ALL YA’LL. The mystical realm of this reality and all its seen & unseen forces.

In the upcoming weeks, we will go on a journey through sound together, exploring sound in different contexts, and sharing songs & stories of my travels. Yoga: You Are More Than Your Thoughts

Who am I

Who am I? The question of enlightenment.

Ask yourself this enough, and the light will surly shine. We can ponder this question into the depths of eternity, or we can take a look at what Yoga has to say.

The first 4 Sutras of The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, are for the advanced practitioner, for those whom which this question begs to be answered.

I’ve written about the first 3 sutras here:

1. Now begins the study of yoga
2. Yoga is the calming of the fluctuations of the mind
3. Then the seer resides in his own true nature

And here is my examination of Sutra 1.4:

Yoga Sutra 1.4 Vritti sarupym itiratra
Otherwise, the seer takes on thought forms as identity

Who are we if not our identities?

You are the seer, all that you experience in this reality is one vibrating energy, vibrating at different frequencies of density creating forms, matter, thought & emotions. With our senses, we experience trees, & with our senses we experience emotions. We do not call ourselves a tree or a house, and yet we call ourselves depressed, tired, angry, & jealous. We literally say, “I am angry,” or “I am a jealous person.” These claims of “I am’s”, are simply rather, states of being. Like clouds form shapes on the sky, move, picking up the atmosphere and pouring down rain, we are more like clouds, changing shape, collecting and pouring out… but we do not say, “I am a cloud”. So why do we say I am angry?

It is more accurate to say, in this moment, I am feeling the state of anger. And that can be true and fine. It’s not that yoga asks us never to feel angry, but to recognize that a feeling state is there for a moment, it’s not who we are.

Anger, sadness, regret, happiness, joy, & the feeling state of romantic love are impermanent. These states deliver sensations to the body, they deliver a message, but they are not your identity. As I wrote about HERE discussing Sutra 1.3, your true nature is beyond one state of being that easily comes and goes. Who we are under our identifications, is eternal & as my teacher says self illuminate.

Our true nature, is hard to put into words, but my dharma asks me to try. Our true nature is accessible always, we walk within our true nature, when we breathe we are it, and we are always breathing. We are always processing, emitting, and transmuting energy unconsciously. We are vibratory beings immersed in the song of the universe. We do not have to do anything to be this, we are already this. When we lean into this, rest into our own divine nature, the things we struggle to know, appear to us as a deeply satisfying feeling.

When we let go of identifying with all that we think we are, we rest in all that we actually are.

So let’s practice at resting in our divine nature. Allowing the song of life to move through us. This is a medicine song coming from South America. Sit and listen to the beat of the drum, allow the words to wash over you and without attachment or judgement simply allow yourself to deeply listen. Before listening, you may want to take a few deeper breaths to prepare yourself for relaxation. Simply allow, and when the video finishes stay in a quiet place and tune in to how you feel, any shifts taking place, and stay relaxed bringing this sense of wholeness into the rest of your day.
